Founded in 1898 by António Bernardino da Silva Chitas in Azenhas do Mar, this house initially focused its sales mainly on the Lisbon region and large‑scale exports to Brazil. Following in his footsteps, his son, António Bernardino da Silva Chitas Júnior, and today his grandson, António Bernardino Paulo da Silva, the company now concentrates not only on the domestic market but also on a significant share of wine exports to various European countries and the United States. It takes pride in the numerous awards it has earned—over 60 medals of gold, silver, and honorable mentions—in national and international competitions, affirming the quality of its wines and its various brands: Colares Chitas, Casa da Azenha, Carunchosa, Ribamar, and Paulo da Silva Garrafeiras. In 1994, the current owner, grandson of the founder, acquired the emblematic Visconde de Salreu cellars in the Colares wine region. Built in 1920, this warehouse originally stored wines in large barrels. In the 1960s, its storage capacity was expanded to about one million litres with the construction of large tanks.
