The Colares wine is known for being unique worldwide. Its terroir, strongly influenced by the Atlantic, imparts an extraordinary saltiness and complex aromas that deepen with bottle ageing. The estate was founded in 1898 by António Bernardino da Silva Chitas in Azenhas do Mar. Initially its sales focused mainly on the Lisbon region and large‑scale exports to Brazil. It was later taken over by his son, also António Bernardino da Silva Chitas Jr., and now by his grandson António Bernardino Paulo da Silva, whose portfolio today serves both the domestic market and a substantial share of exports to various European countries and the United States.
