With a history that traces back to the early 18th century, the main house was built in 1720 and, surprisingly, survived the 1755 earthquake thanks to the granitic structure of the Sintra Mountains. In 1903 wine production stopped, but a century later the “most western vineyards of Europe” were replanted and the winery modernised. The wines of Casal Sta. Maria are the result of nature’s expression and the unique terroir surrounding the vines, which lie along the coastal edge of the Sintra Mountains. (Illustrative image only)
