Murça Cooperative Winery was founded in 1963 by a small group of vintners led by Francisco Abel Carneiro Lopes. Located in the Demarcated Douro Region, it now has 750 cooperators and 800 hectares of vines, and its emblem is the well‑known Murça Pig, carved into a granite monolith. The vineyards, planted on slate and quartzite soils protected on the west from humid Atlantic winds and on the north from cold, dry Galician breezes, enjoy a Mediterranean climate marked by hot, dry summers and mild, relatively dry winters. These factors, which influence the wines’ typicity, combined with the vintners’ strong commitment, have cemented Murça’s reputation as a region that produces outstanding wines. (Illustrative image)
