Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. It is today the oldest still‑operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, when the production of Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia was prohibited, the company shifted to selling table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s it launched one of the most celebrated Bairrada wine brands, “Frei João,” and a little later introduced the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” label from the demarcated Dão region.
