Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family‑owned business that originally focused on distributing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition on producing Port wine outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company shifted to marketing table wines from Bairrada. By the late 1950s it launched one of Bairrada’s most celebrated labels, “Frei João,” and a little later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region. (illustrative image only)
