Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family company that originally focused on the distribution of fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest still‑active family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, following the prohibition on producing Porto wine outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began trading table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of the region’s most celebrated wine brands was born – “Frei João” – and a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” label from the demarcated Dão region (illustrative image only).
