Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João began as a family business focused on selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it is the oldest family winery still operating in Anadia. In the 1930s, after the ban on producing port outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it switched to marketing Bairrada table wines. By the late 1950s the celebrated “Frei João” brand emerged, followed a few years later by the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” label from the demarcated Dão region. (Illustrative image only)
