Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on marketing fine wines from the Douro and liqueurs. Today it is the oldest family winery still in operation in the municipality of Anadia, and in the 1930s, after the prohibition of Port wine production outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began selling table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, one of the most celebrated wine brands in the Bairrada region – “Frei João” – was launched, and a little later the brand “Porta dos Cavaleiros” from the demarcated Dão region.
