Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally focused on selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest operating family wine company in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition of producing Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company shifted to marketing table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, the “Frei João” brand—one of the most celebrated wines in the Bairrada region—was launched, and a little later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region was introduced.
