Description

In 1860, Madame Pommery proved herself a formidable entrepreneur by inheriting her husband's champagne business, widowed and with two young children, she, unfamiliar with the industry, did not hesitate and took control of the company. She expanded the vineyards, built underground tunnels, and erected a true English‑style castle, setting herself apart from other producers at a time when champagne was synonymous with luxury and had already won the favour of royalty. In 1874, to cater to English tastes—which found the champagnes produced up to then too sweet—she created the first Brut Champagne, with less sugar and revolutionised the way champagne was made. Today, about 5.5 million bottles are produced annually, covering all brand lines. (illustrative image only)
