Château Latour 2009 was a year of exceptionally high-quality wines. The heart of the Enclos is the only terroir that, year after year, consistently produces the depth, elegance, and concentration we expect from the Grand Vin. It is here that the Cabernet Sauvignon—making up over 90% of the lot—reaches its maximum expression in terms of color, richness, and freshness. These wines require time—often a decade—before they begin to reveal their full tasting potential. After a relatively wet early spring, 2009 will be remembered for an exceptionally hot, dry summer, even more sunny than that of 2005. The cool spring weather resulted in slower vine growth. From May onward, the year was marked by monthly temperatures well above seasonal averages, allowing the vines to recover from the early lag. The excellent summer climate was only interrupted by a few stormy periods in July, which prevented the soil from replenishing its water reserves. This deficit intensified in August and September. Shortly after the painter (referring to the period of the painter—likely a mistranslation; possibly "after the rain" or "shortly after the onset of drought"), the vines began to show significant signs of stress. The very dry conditions in the first half of September led to concentration of the berries, already small in size. The rain on September 19 and 20 proved very beneficial for refining the tannins.
