Colares wine is unique in the world. The terroir’s strong Atlantic influence imparts an extraordinary saltiness to the wines, as well as complex aromas that deepen with bottle ageing. The estate was founded in 1898 by António Bernardino da Silva Chitas in Azenhas do Mar. In its early years sales were mainly concentrated in the Lisbon region and on large‑scale export to Brazil. After him, his son António Bernardino da Silva Chitas Jr., and now his grandson António Bernardino Paulo da Silva, have expanded the business, focusing today not only on the domestic market but also on significant exports to various European countries and the United States.
