Colares wines are an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. Start with the vineyards, which cover an impressive 15 hectares, giving a glimpse of the dynamism of this tiny region. An uncommon feature is that these vineyards were never struck by the phylloxera scourge at the end of the 19th century, thanks to their sandy soils. Despite these paradoxes, Colares is a distinct region that produces genuine, character‑rich wines. They were among the most renowned and sought‑after wines of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, and even today wines from those decades still exhibit enviable longevity—a rarity even for great wines. The main grape varieties are Ramisco for the reds and Malvasia de Colares for the whites. Both varieties, shaped by a strong maritime influence, give these wines a unique singularity and character worth discovering. (illustrative image)
