The wines of Colares form an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. Let’s begin with the vineyards, which cover an impressive 15 hectares, giving a glimpse of the dynamism of this tiny region. An uncommon feature is that these vines have never been hit by the phylloxera plague at the end of the nineteenth century, thanks to their location on sandy soils. Yet, Colares—despite these paradoxes—is a region in its own right that produces genuine wines full of character. They were among the most respected and sought‑after wines of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. Even today you can find those very vintages still in remarkable health, giving them an unmatched longevity that is only possible in great wines. The principal grape varieties are Ramisco for the reds and Malvasia de Colares for the whites. Both grapes, shaped by an exceptional maritime influence, bestow a unique singularity and character on these wines that deserve to be known.
