Colares wines are an unparalleled paradox in Portugal. From vineyards that never suffered from phylloxera thanks to being planted on sandy soils, to the distinctive quality these wines embody. Their unique character stems from the grape varieties, the soil, a temperate, humid summer climate, and the fact that 80 % of the vineyard is sown on sandy ground, honouring traditional viticulture practices. Colares wines only reach their peak after several years, though the minimum ageing is 18 months, and as a result their commercial availability is very limited.
