Colares wines are an unrivaled paradox in Portugal. From the vineyards, which have escaped phylloxera thanks to being planted on sandy soils, to the distinctive quality these wines embody, the wine’s unique traits are owed to its varieties, soil, and a temperate, humid summer climate—plus the fact that 80 % of the vines grow on sandy soils, upholding traditional viticulture practices. Colares wine only reaches its full quality after several years, even though the minimum aging period is 18 months, which is why its commercialisation is very limited. (illustrative image only)
