In 1988 a Danish‑American couple set sail in a sailboat in search of a place to start a family, plant a vineyard and make wine. A fairy‑tale dream that gave rise to Cortes de Cima, now one of Portugal’s leading wineries. Located in Vidigueira, the family estate is run day‑to‑day by Hans and Carrie Jorgensen and spans 140 hectares of vines planted with Aragonês, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Petit Verdot, Antão Vaz and Verdelho. The oldest plantings date to 1991, when Syrah was not yet permitted in the region. Nevertheless, Hans, convinced the climate and soil were ideal for this Rhône variety, produced the first unofficial Syrah in 1998 under the name Incógnito, which quickly won acclaim in Portugal and medals in London, Brussels and Bordeaux.
