In 1988, a Danish man and an American woman set sail on a yacht in search of a place where they could start a family, plant a vineyard, and produce wine. A fairy‑tale dream that became the beginning of Cortes de Cima, now one of Portugal’s leading wineries. Located in Vidigueira, Cortes de Cima is a family‑owned estate run daily by Hans and Carrie Jorgensen. The property spans 140 hectares of vineyard planted with Aragonês, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Petit Verdot, Antão Vaz, and Verdelho. The oldest vines were planted in 1991, when the Syrah variety was not yet permitted under regional regulations. Still, Hans, convinced that the climate and soil were ideal for this Rhône grape, produced the first Syrah wine in 1998—though not yet licensed—under the name *Incógnito*. It quickly gained recognition in Portugal and earned medals in London, Brussels, and Bordeaux. *(Illustrative image only)*
