In 1988, a Danish-American couple set sail in a yacht searching for a place to start a family, plant a vineyard, and produce wine. A fairy‑tale dream that launched the story of Cortes de Cima, now one of Portugal’s leading wineries. Located in Vidigueira, the family estate is run daily by Hans and Carrie Jorgensen, covering 140 hectares of vines planted with Aragonês, Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira, Petit Verdot, Antão Vaz and Verdelho. The oldest vines were planted in 1991, when Syrah was not yet permitted in the region’s regulations. Nevertheless, Hans, convinced the climate and soil were ideal for Rhône’s Syrah, created the first unregistered Syrah wine in 1998, marketed as *Incógnito*, which quickly gained renown in Portugal and earned medals in London, Brussels and Bordeaux.
