Cos D'Estournel Cos is located in Saint-Estèphe but borders Pauillac and, in particular, the vineyards of Château Lafite. The quality was good in the 1990s, but since the 2001 harvest it has reached another level. In some vintages, the level of quality is close to that of the top Cru wines. The new and dazzling cellar is the most modern and sophisticated in all of Bordeaux, with the world's only 100 % gravity cellar – no pumps are used. Cos is now competing with Léoville‑Lascases, Ducru‑Beaucourt and Palmer as the best non‑First Cru in the Médoc. After the departure of Jaen‑Guillaume Prats, the new man at the helm is Aymeric de Gironde, who joined from Pichon Baron. Made from a blend of 76 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 23 % Merlot and 1 % Cabernet Franc, the 2016 vintage of Château Cos d’Estournel benefited from exceptional and atypical conditions. Located in the north of the Médoc, in the Saint‑Estèphe appellation, the vineyards have a high average age and benefit from an ideal terroir for producing a rare wine, with extremely clayey soils. Deep roots, in particular, allowed the vines to withstand extreme climatic variations linked to a severe drought in the Gironde department. The wine was aged in barrels, 60 % of which were new.
