In a natural amphitheatre with south‑facing slopes along the Douro River, the Quinta de Covela has stood since the 16th century at the border between the granitic zone of the Verde Wines Region and the slate region of Porto Wines. With panoramic river views, the estate covers 49 hectares, 18 of which are planted with vines across the Lower Douro civil parishes of São Tomé de Covelas and Santa Cruz do Douro, famed for their extraordinary natural beauty and rich cultural history. In more recent times, the estate belonged to Manoel de Oliveira, one of Europe’s most important mid‑century filmmakers, who, as a “Renaissance Man,” transformed the property with aqueducts, solid walls, stone houses and granite barrels for drying the locally grown corn.
