Located in a natural amphitheater facing south on the slopes of the Douro River, the Quinta de Covela sits on the border between the granite zone of the Região dos Vinhos Verdes and the schist area of the Porto Wine region. The estate, which dates back to the 16th century, spans 49 hectares, 18 of which are planted with vines and spread across the Baixo Douro parishes of São Tomé de Covelas and Santa Cruz do Douro, celebrated for their extraordinary natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. In more recent history, the property belonged to Manoel de Oliveira, a leading European filmmaker of the mid‑20th century to today, who, as a “Man of the Renaissance,” transformed the estate by constructing aqueducts, robust walls, stone houses and granite wine presses to dry the locally grown corn.
