Description

Set in a natural amphitheater with a southerly exposure on the slopes of the Douro River, at the border between the granitic zone of the Vinho Verde region and the slate zone of the Porto wine area, lies the Quinta de Covela, which has been in operation since the sixteenth century. With panoramic views of the river, the estate covers 49 hectares, 18 of which are planted with vines, spread across two parishes in the Lower Douro: São Tomé de Covelas and Santa Cruz do Douro. These parishes are renowned for their extraordinary natural beauty and rich cultural history. In more recent times, Covela belonged to Manoel de Oliveira, one of the most important European filmmakers of the mid‑twentieth century to the present day. The director—also a "Renaissance Man"—transformed the estate in many ways, building aqueducts, solid walls, stone houses and granite drying racks for the corn grown here. (Illustrative image only)
