Alain Graillot left a career in agrochemicals in 1985 to pursue a dream on a rented plot of vineyards, in the site of an old pig farm, on the Chassis plateau between Tain l'Hermitage and Pont l'Isère in the Crozes-Hermitage appellation in the northern Rhône. Today Alain is one of the most respected winemakers in the Rhône Valley, whose wines appear on the menus of the best restaurants in France and who has many celebrated viticulturists in his circle of friends. Graillot’s philosophy is as simple as his success – to produce attractive, sensibly made wines at prices people will want to drink. Alain’s vineyards now cover 17.3 hectares of Syrah and 2.6 hectares of Marsanne and Roussanne (planted in an 80/20 Marsanne‑Roussanne ratio) that surround his cellars in Les Chênes Verts. These vineyards are a major source of light but characterful wines, both red and white Crozes-Hermitage, with an accentuated fruit flavor. (Illustrative image)
