Description

Pouilly-Fumé – a dry white wine made from Sauvignon Blanc grapes – is one of the most respected wines of the Loire Valley. It is only matched by Sancerre, just across the Loire River, and perhaps Vouvray. The name Pouilly‑Fumé is composed of two parts: “Pouilly” is a shortened form of Pouilly‑sur‑Loire, the village from which these wines originate, and “Fumé” is an abbreviation of Blanc Fumé, the local nickname for Sauvignon Blanc. It is sometimes understandably confused with Pouilly‑Fuisse, which refers to the wine base of southern Burgundy’s Chardonnay.
