The Confuron family – Yves, Jean‑Pierre, and patriarch Jacky – represent the current generations of a very old Burgundy house, even mentioned in the court of Louis XIV. The estate is run by Yves and Jean‑Pierre, though it’s really Yves who gives it his soul. He splits his time between this domaine and Domaine de Courcel in Pommard. The family is tightly knit, and Jacky always offers help whenever he can. Several factors make this producer special. First, unlike most Burgundy growers, Yves delays the harvest until the Pinot Noir is fully mature; when it arrives, he picks at 100 % sugar content, aiming for freshness and finesse. Second, he follows a purist philosophy, avoiding any intervention that would harm the vines or the fruit, with an almost obsessive rigor. The result is excellent wines that may initially seem a bit “heavy”, but with about six years of aging become truly majestic. As a curiosity – a distinction no other family holds – there is a Pinot Noir variety in Burgundy called Pinot Confuron. (Illustrative image)
