The Domaine Mugneret‑Gibourg is seen by many as the pinnacle of what Pinot Noir can achieve. Dr. Georges Mugneret took the reins of the estate in the late 1950s, shortly after beginning his career as an ophthalmologist. Over the next thirty years, between treating eyes and tending vines, he added remarkable parcels of 1er and Grand Cru wines before his sudden, tragic death in 1988. His wife Jacqueline and daughters Marie‑Christine and Marie‑Andrée chose to carry on the legacy started by Dr. Mugneret. The transparency of the wines from this domain reveals the nuances and idiosyncrasies of its individual terroirs more than perhaps any other in Burgundy, and although that was not the original goal, it has become one of the main reasons Mugneret‑Gibourg is regarded as a benchmark wine of Burgundy.
