The Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (the earliest record dates back to 1616), is located on the banks of the Douro River near the town of Régua, in the heart of the world’s oldest demarcated region, the Douro. At the estate’s dock, Rabelo boats would moor to load their barrels full of port wine and transport them to Gaia, at the river’s mouth, where they were sold wholesale worldwide. Their hidden identity was erased, as these wooden casks bore no producer seal. At the destination, the wine was bottled and labelled with the brand of the foreign merchants who purchased it, some of whom went on to gain considerable prestige. (Illustrative image only)
