Quinta da Vacaria, one of the oldest estates in the region (first recorded in 1616), sits on the banks of the Douro River beside the town of Régua, in the heart of the world's oldest demarcated wine region, the Douro. At the estate’s quay, Rabelo boats would dock to load large barrels full of Port wine and transport them to Gaia at the river’s mouth, where they were sold wholesale to markets around the world. In doing so, the wine’s identity was obscured, as the wooden barrels were not even stamped with the producer’s seal. Once there, the wine was bottled and labeled with the brand of the foreign merchants who purchased it, and some of those merchants went on to earn considerable prestige. (illustrative image)
