The Paço do Conde estate dates back to the 14th century, first recorded in 1378 at the dawn of the Portuguese kingdom. It spans 4,000 hectares, most of which lie amid the remains of an ancient Roman castle along the Guadiana and the Roman town of the “Vilares.” The Castelo Branco family has owned the estate for over three centuries, with the current management led by José António Ferrão Castelo Branco, Luís Miguel Ferrão Castelo Branco and Maria Luísa Castelo Branco Schmidt, the founder’s grandsons. The 4,000 hectares are cultivated for a variety of purposes—from grape production for wine to olive groves, cereals, seeded and natural pastures for cattle and the black mountain pig, among other agricultural activities. Sustaining the agricultural operation and developing the winery and cellar are essential components of the project. (Illustrative image only)
