Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it is the oldest family‑owned wine company still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the ban on producing Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company shifted to marketing table wines from Bairrada. By the late 1950s it launched one of the region’s most celebrated wine brands – “Frei João” – and, a little later, the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region.
