The area currently occupied by Chianti Rufina was defined in a 1716 decree that regulated four production zones in Tuscany, granting the right to market wines under the name of their origin: Pomino, Valdarno, Caremignano, and Chianti. In 1967, Chianti Rufina received DOC status, and in 1984 it was elevated to DOCG. Today it is the smallest Chianti zone, covering 750 hectares. Due to the region’s particular characteristics, an independent denomination was proposed in the 1970s, a goal that producers still pursue today.
