Wines produced in the Dão region have enjoyed a long‑standing reputation, with their typicity legally recognised by the law of 18 September 1908, which defined its production area, and later by the decree of 25 May 1910, which regulated production and marketing. In 1934 the Dão Wine Region (also known as Adega do Dão) emerged as the first corporate body to steer the region’s future, and in 1942, after the creation of the National Wine Board (JNV) and the proliferation of Grémio da Lavoura, the Adega do Dão was replaced by the Federation of Dão Vinegrowers (FVD).
