In the Chão dos Eremitas, at the foot of Serra d’Ossa, there is evidence of uninterrupted winemaking since the 14th century. In 1397 a Papal Bull exempted the Pauperes Eremitas (monks of the Order of Saint Paul, the so‑called “Paulistas”) from taxes on their vineyards, underscoring how important these vineyards already were at the time. This is a special place—sit down! Two streams carry rainwater from Serra d’Ossa, keeping the soil cool even during the intense Alentejo heat. From the same terroir and the same grape varieties, a new, fresh identity emerged in the plots: our “Pequeno Eremita.” The Pequeno Eremita is a tribute to this unique place and to the grape varieties that once dominated the region’s winemaking landscape, but now are nearly extinct.
