The Quinta da Fonte Souto is the first property acquired by the Symington family beyond the Douro. Located in the Portalegre sub‑region of Alto Alentejo, near the Serra de São Mamede, the estate benefits from altitude and a cool microclimate; however, its slate and granite soils keep production low, allowing the crafting of wines that are both concentrated and fresh. With about 207 hectares, of which 43 are vineyards, the property also boasts a substantial area of chestnut trees—hence the name “souto,” a wooded area planted with chestnuts. The first wines from Quinta da Fonte Souto were released in 2019 and immediately found success. It’s a Duriense enology adapted to the Alentejo privilege. (illustrative image only)
