Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally focused on distributing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest still‑active family‑owned winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the ban on producing Port outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company shifted to marketing table wines from Bairrada. By the late 1950s, one of Bairrada’s most celebrated brands, “Frei João,” emerged, and a little later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region appeared (illustrative image).
