Wine produced in the Bairrada region. It displays a deep ruby hue, with an intense and complex bouquet dominated by plum, raisin, dried fig and blackberry notes, all wrapped in pleasant oak wood nuances. On the palate it offers excellent structure and good balance, featuring rounded tannins and a long sensory persistence. Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, the Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia; in the 1930s, after the ban on port wine production outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began trading table wines from Bairrada. Thus, by the late 1950s one of the most celebrated Bairrada wine brands, Frei João, was born, followed later by the Porta dos Cavaleiros brand in the demarcated Dão region. (illustrative image)
