Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family‑run company that originally focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition on producing port wine outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began selling table wines from Bairrada. At the end of the 1950s, the celebrated “Frei João” brand was launched, and a bit later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” label from the demarcated Dão region was introduced. (Illustrative image only)
