This Bairrada wine, from the aptly named Frei João, is a wonderfully considered expression – clearly crafted with a monk’s dedication. The Syrah, Merlot, Baga, and Aragonez grapes were meticulously hand-picked, releasing aromas of blackcurrant, dried fig, and a subtle hint of pine, a signature of the blend. Rui Moura Alves has expertly softened the tannins, resulting in a full-bodied wine begging for contemplation. A truly rewarding experience, particularly well-suited to grilled beef – a classic pairing that echoes the Caves São João’s 100-year heritage.
