Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel, and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest family‑owned winery still operating in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the ban on producing Port wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company shifted to selling table wines from Bairrada. By the late 1950s, it launched one of the most celebrated wine brands in the Bairrada region – “Frei João” – and, a little later, the brand “Porta dos Cavaleiros” from the demarcated Dão region.
