Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, the São João Caves began as a family business focused on selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it remains the oldest still‑operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition on producing Port outside Vila Nova de Gaia, the company switched to trading table wines from the Bairrada region. By the late 1950s it launched one of Bairrada’s most celebrated labels, “Frei João”, and later introduced the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region. (Illustrative image only)
