Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that initially focused on selling fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today the oldest still‑operating family winery in the municipality of Anadia, it shifted in the 1930s—after the prohibition of port wine production outside Vila Nova de Gaia—to marketing table wines from Bairrada. By the late 1950s it launched one of the region’s most famous labels, “Frei João,” and a bit later the “Porta dos Cavaleiros” brand from the demarcated Dão region.
