Frei João Reserva Tinto

Description

After a manual harvest, rigorous selection and complete destemming, the grapes macerated for 12 days in press vats with a pneumatic treader. At the end of malolactic fermentation, the wine aged for 12 months in French oak barrels. It was bottled after minimal clarification, with an aging potential of 10 to 15 years. Founded in 1920 by brothers José, Manuel and Albano Costa, Caves São João is a family business that originally focused on marketing fine Douro wines and liqueurs. Today it is the oldest family winery still in operation in the municipality of Anadia. In the 1930s, after the prohibition on producing Porto wines outside Vila Nova de Gaia, it began selling table wines from Bairrada. Thus, at the end of the 1950s, one of the region’s most celebrated Bairrada wine brands, Frei João, was born, later followed by the brand Porta dos Cavaleiros in the demarcated Dão region.
