Gianni Gagliardo An exceptional Barolo, aged five years in oak. Produced only in truly remarkable years, this 2005 Barolo Riserva is crafted from Nebbiolo grapes sourced from the Lazzarito (Serralunga d’Alba) and Mosconi (Monforte d’Alba) vineyards. Each plot was vinified separately, with 8‑12 days of maceration, spontaneous fermentation, and five years of oak maturation—first 12 months in small barrels, followed by 12 months in large vats. After the 2006 batching, the wine revealed a profile of great structure, depth and elegance, with firm tannins and excellent aging potential. An unusual but promising vintage: The 2005 growing season featured stark climatic contrasts—a very hot early summer followed by a cool, dry August, which promoted balanced grape ripening. In September, the grapes were in excellent health, with high sugar content and good phenolic maturity. The only concern was thin skins, raising rot risk in case of rain. Accordingly, the harvest was advanced. On 2 October, heavy rain fell and persisted for a week, but by then the wine was safely fermenting in the cellar, securing another outstanding harvest.
