This Viognier from Herdade da Maroteira certainly seems to have enjoyed a long and pleasant journey. Grown on clay-calcareous soils of the Serra D’Ossa, it’s been subtly influenced by French and American oak, revealing aromas of orange blossom and tropical fruits – a lovely invitation to begin the experience. The creamy texture, a result of extended barrel aging, suggests a wine best savoured with quiet contemplation, perhaps alongside some grilled fish or a gentle curry to really coax out its complexities. Quite a surprise, considering this family-run project, with roots stretching back to the 19th century in the Alentejo, has unexpectedly embraced Viognier as its favoured grape.
