The Herdade da Maroteira lies at the foot of Serra D’Ossa and covers 540 hectares, all owned by the same Anglo‑Portuguese family for five generations since the mid‑nineteenth century. At that time, Robert Reynolds invested in the Alentejano sobro woodland to satisfy the Port‑wine industry’s needs in northern Portugal, and for roughly 150 years the estate’s focus was on cork and livestock. It was only in 2000 that Philip Mollet, the current owner and manager, overhauled the farm’s strategy and planted vineyards. Since then the property has produced excellent Alentejo wines based on its favourite grape, Syrah. The vines are spread over 15 hectares of clay‑calcareous soils, giving the wines the genuine character of Alentejo.
