The Herdade da Maroteira is situated at the foot of Serra D’Ossa and spans 540 hectares, all owned by the same Anglo‑Portuguese family for five generations since the mid‑19th century. At that time, Robert Reynolds invested in the Alentejo sobro woodland to satisfy the needs of the Port wine industry in northern Portugal, and for about 150 years the estate focused on cork and livestock. It was only in 2000 that Philip Mollet, the current owner and manager, revolutionised the property’s strategy and planted vines. Since then, the estate has produced excellent Alentejo wines based on its preferred variety, Syrah. The vines are spread over 15 hectares planted on clay‑limestone soils, giving the wines the genuine character of Alentejo. (Illustrative image only)
