Description

The first documented reference to Herdade de Espirra is attributed to José Maria dos Santos, former owner and visionary Portuguese farmer who planted the estate in the late nineteenth century on the Setúbal Peninsula. It was the world's largest contiguous vineyard, covering 2,400 hectares, until it was destroyed by Phylloxera in 1872 and later converted into forest crops. The current owner, Portucel, acquired the property in 1985, restructured the vineyard, and restored the facilities—especially the cellar—so that wine production could be carried out with great rigor and professionalism. A new company, Sociedade de Vinhos da Herdade de Espirra, was then created to produce and market Espirra wine, respecting the region’s traditional cultures and practices.
