The story of Johnnie Walker begins, naturally, with the man who gave this whisky its name. John Walker’s father died in 1819. A tough start for a boy from the countryside, yet John always possessed something special—sparkle in his eyes, fire in his belly, energy in every step he took. When John passed away in 1857, after a full and prosperous life, he left his son Alexander a strong business. Alexander recognised a golden opportunity when it appeared. In 1867 he launched the first commercial blend, naming it Old Highland Whisky. By 1920, Johnnie Walker whisky was already present in 120 countries, and over the century it became part of global culture. The brand’s zenith came on 1 January 1934, when John Walker & Sons received a Royal Certificate from King George V to supply whisky to the royal household. Today, Johnnie Walker is the world’s largest whisky brand, and its slogan is seen as a battle cry for progress, courage in adversity, and a cheerful expression of optimism. (illustrative image only)
